Our Purpose

Many people today are looking for purpose.  Why do they exist and what are they to do?  Sadly, many churches lack purpose.  And for the churches which do have a purpose, it all too often falls short of what God desires of the local church.

Since God created the church and since Christ is the Head of the church, we would be wise to consider what the Bible, God's special revelation to us, says regarding the purpose for His church.  We do not have to look long or hard, for at the inception of the New Testament church, Dr. Luke provides a concise statement of purpose in Acts 2:41-44, a three-fold purpose:

Our Core Values

A God-Centered World View.  John 17:1Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You."  While most people believe the world revolves around man, the Bible teaches that God created us for His glory and that our primary purpose in life is to glorify Him—to honor Him and magnify His brilliant attributes in every sphere of life.  We also acknowledge the sovereignty of God over every aspect of life—that all events of life happen according to the will and plan of God.

The Authority of Scripture.  2 Timothy 5:16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable...  In an age in which the concept of absolute truth is often rejected, we hold up the Bible as our only authority for truth and practice.  Therefore the Sunday morning preaching and everything we do during the week are based upon the Bible and the truth it contains.

Our Statement of Faith

Our statement of faith consists of the following points. Click on the Bible icons following each statement to view their corresponding scripture references.

  • The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
    1. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
    2. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 – And for this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God’s message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
    3. Psalm 119:160 – The sum of Thy word is truth, and every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting.
    4. 2 Peter 1:20-21 – But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
  • There is one God, eternal, self-existing in three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who have from eternity shared infinite glory and enjoyed loving communion and who are equally worthy of love, honor and adoration.
    1. Deuteronomy 6:4 – "Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!"
    2. 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 – Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
    3. 1 Timothy 1:17 – Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
    4. Acts 17:24-25 – "The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all life and breath and all things."
    5. Matthew 3:16-17 – And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
    6. John 17:5,24,26 – "And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. Father, I desire that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am, in order that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me; for Thou didst love Me before the foundation of the world. And I have made Thy name known to them, and will make it known; that the love wherewith Thou didst love Me may be in them, and I in them."
    7. Luke 10:21 – At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou didst hide these things from the wise and intelligent and didst reveal them to babes. Yes, Father, for thus it was well-pleasing in Thy sight."
    8. John 1:18 – No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
    9. Ephesians 2:18 – for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
    10. Matthew 28:19 – "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."
    11. 2 Corinthians 13:14 – The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
  • All mankind participated in Adam’s fall from his original sinless state and is thus lost in sin and totally helpless.
    1. Romans 5:12 – Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.
    2. Psalm 51:5 – Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.
    3. Romans 3:10-12 – As it is written,"There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one."
    4. Romans 8:7 – because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so.
    5. Ephesians 2:1 – And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.
